PM for the blind and users with low-vision

Create a way for blind mathematicians/low-vision users to view and contribute to PM.

For the blind, there are systems for representing math formulas for the blind. However, I don't know if it is possible to easily translate latex into this format. For low-vision users, the solution is probably much easier. We only need to render the entries in really large fonts (?). Preferably user selectable.

See http://www.panix.com/~kestrell/math.html

Someone seriously interested in implementing this should maybe first email the maintainer/mailing list in the above page and ask for more info?

This would open up a new niche for PM. I can't even image how difficult math is if you can't see. --matte 17 March 2005

No-vision math is actually pretty popular, historically speaking. Euler and Plateau are two famous examples, and I'm sure there are many more. Studying late at night by candlelight can't be great on the eyes.

I'm hoping that we'll eventually publish the FEM in texinfo format, at which point browsing it using Emacspeak may become easy.

While not necessarily sufficient, the Text-only webpage idea seems like a good step towards helping low-vision folks. Presumably blind/low-vision computer users already have their own favorite generically useful accessibility tools. --jcorneli Sun Apr 17 21:30:44 2005 UTC
